In the US, there are three FDA approved breast implants manufacturer. They are Allergan Inc., Mentor I, and recently Sientra Inc. There are two main breast implant types approved by FDA for cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. They are saline and silicone gel implants. The implant shells over outer covers are the same for both the saline and silicone type implants. The shell is made up of silicone elastomer (silicone rubber). For saline implants, the implant is filled with sterile saline.
For silicone gel implants, the implants are filled with silicone gel, which are cross linked silicone particles. Silicone implants are more expensive than saline implants. Silicone implants run on average around $900 per implant and saline implants are approximately $500 per implant. While many women may feel influenced by the price of implants, it is best to look at the results of using different types of implants, as they can give a completely different look. Saline implants have a higher risk of rippling, and can have a harder feel when compared to a silicone implant.
You should have a thorough discussion with your Board Certified Plastic Surgeon as to which implants best suit your need.
