HOW IS A BREAST LIFT PERFORMED?

WHAT IS DISCUSSED AT MY CONSULTATION?

At your consultation, you and Dr. Goldberg will discuss your desires for the look and feel of your breasts. Dr. Goldberg will evaluate your breasts and decide if a breast lift is right for you.

If you are a candidate for breast lift surgery, then she will decide which type of anesthesia and which incision type she will use for your procedure. She will then address any questions or concerns that you may have about your lift and provide you with pre and postoperative instructions.

WHAT KIND OF ANESTHESIA IS USED FOR BREAST LIFT SURGERY?

Depending on the extent of the procedure (including breast size and shape, amount of excess skin needing to be removed, and size and position of the areolas), either local anesthesia or general anesthesia will be used. Regardless of which anesthesia is used, you will not feel any pain during the surgery.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MY BREAST LIFT?

After the anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Goldberg will make an incision in the breast. She will lift and reshape the underlying breast tissue and reposition the nipple and areola. If necessary, she will reduce the size of the areola. Lastly, the incisions will be closed, and you will be ready to begin your recovery.

The procedure usually takes anywhere from two to three hours to complete.

WHERE WILL MY BREAST LIFT INCISIONS BE?

There are three different types of incisions that Dr. Goldberg uses for breast lift surgery:

  • Donut lift: Used for minimal sagging. The incision is made around the areola. This is the least effective lift technique as it provides minimal movement of the nipple-areola complex location in relation to the breast mound. Furthermore, the scar around the nipple tends to widen with time due to the tension around the nipple.

  • Lollipop lift: Used for moderate to severe sagging. The incision is made around the areola and extends down the lower pole of the breast, making it look like a lollipop. This is a much more effective lift technique. Dr. Goldberg often uses your own breast tissue to augment the upper pole and give fullness to the overall breast.

  • Anchor or inverted-T lift: Used for severe sagging and correction. The incision begins as a lollipop lift, but another incision is made across the inframammary fold (the breast crease) below the breast. This is a very effective breast lift. Dr. Goldberg minimizes the horizontal component of the scar, yielding less scars on your breast. Dr. Goldberg also uses your own breast tissue to augment the upper pole, a procedure called autoaugmentation, resulting in added fullness to your breast.

Here are illustrative cases of different breast lift.

WHAT IS GALAFLEX® SURGICAL SCAFFOLDING?

GalaFLEX® surgical scaffolding is a mesh material that is placed in the breast during a lift. This mesh acts as an internal bra by reinforcing the tissues. Breast lifts with GalaFLEX® tend to have longer-lasting results.

WHAT IS BREAST LIFT RECOVERY LIKE?

After your procedure, you may have a tube temporarily placed to drain fluid and excess blood. You will have some soreness, swelling, and bruising in your breasts; however, these side effects should dissipate within two weeks, and medication can be taken to alleviate any postoperative discomfort.

You will need to refrain from strenuous activity for two weeks, but you should be able to return to work within one to two weeks of your surgery. It is normal to have some numbness in the area for up to six weeks. During that time, you will need to wear a compression garment to speed up recovery.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT FROM BREAST LIFT SURGERY?

HOW LONG UNTIL I SEE MY RESULTS?

While you will have some swelling and bruising in the area, your results will be visible immediately after your procedure. However, it can take up to six weeks to see your final results.

WILL THERE BE ANY SCARS?

Breast lift surgery requires incisions, which means that you will have scars. While a good portion of breast lift scars will be hidden in the breast contours around the areola and in the natural creases, there will be some visible scarring on the breast skin if a lollipop or anchor/inverted-T incision is used. These scars should fade over time.

CAN A BREAST LIFT BE COMBINED WITH OTHER PROCEDURES?

Yes. While some women choose to have a breast lift as a standalone procedure, many combine their surgery with other procedures. Some of the most common combinations include a breast lift with implants (augmentation) and a breast reduction and lift. Combinations are performed when women wish to alter the size of their breasts as well.

One of the benefits of combining procedures is less overall recovery, as you will be recovering from multiple procedures at the same time.

HOW MUCH DOES A BREAST LIFT COST?

As with all surgeries, breast lift cost varies by patient. The breast lift price depends on the extent of the correction, the type of anesthesia used, the incision technique needed, and whether the breast lift is combined with any other procedures. At your consultation, you will be provided with an accurate cost estimate.
