Congenital Breast Deformity

Spread the love

Background of human breast tissue development:
Human breast tissue begins to develop during the 5th week of gestation in utero. The first recognizable breast tissue in an embryo is the mammary ridge, also known as the milk lines, which extends from the axilla to the groin on both sides. The milk line then regresses back to two primitive breast tissues on the chest at 3 months of gestation. These primitive breast tissues continue to develop with the early appearance breast tissue, ducts, and suspending ligaments (cooper’s ligament) which connect the breast tissues to the chest. The breast tissue continues to mature until birth, at which time the development stops until puberty.
