Many women who are deeply unhappy with the size and/or appearance of their breasts hesitate to take the step that could resolve the issue; Breast augmentation. Long Beach area women often have doubts about the long-term outcome of augmentation, many of them fueled by exaggerations and myths about the possible short and long term effects of these procedures. Here are some facts, as outlined by a recent study, that should clear the air and dispel some of those myths, allowing women to make solid, informed decisions on breast augmentation.

In a prospective outcome study published in the May, 2013 issue of the journal “Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery,” researchers evaluated 225 women over a five year period who had undergone breast augmentation. Long Beach women who have been put off by misinformation about these procedures might be relieved to learn that, according the the results of that study, 98 percent of women reported satisfaction with outcome of their breast augmentation procedure in interviews that included questions about complications, recovery, results and psychological effects.

Among the common misconceptions about breast augmentation is that patients suffer extreme pain and long, drawn-out recoveries. However, the facts say otherwise, according to study findings, with the average patient reporting a pain score of 5.9 on a 10 point scale during recovery, using prescription pain medications for an average of 5 days, and able to return to work or other daily activities in 7 days. On average, patients felt fully recovered, or “back to normal,” 25 days after breast augmentation.

As for those rumors of widespread side effects, complications and patient dissatisfaction with the appearance of their breasts after breast augmentation, Long Beach women interested in enhancing their figures will be happy to hear that study results debunk them as well. Complication rates among the surveyed patients was 10 percent. Almost 40 percent reported nipple numbness after surgery, but in all but 2 percent, this fairly common side-effect resolved on its own. Improved self esteem after breast augmentation was reported by 92 percent of subjects, and 64 percent felt that their quality of life was enhanced by the procedure. Overall, 98 percent of the women in this study reported a that breast augmentation results met or exceeded their expectations.

Although cosmetic breast surgery, despite popular misinformation, is generally safe and effective, as with any surgical procedure, there is some risk of complications with breast augmentation. Long Beach patients can minimize those risks by carefully examining the credentials, skill and reputation of any plastic surgeon they are considering for their procedure before committing to surgery.

So there you have it, the real facts of the matter. Don’t let misinformation stand between you and a more attractive figure.
